A Mediterranean hinterland community near a port, featuring small neighborhoods with solar panels on rooftops, green roofs, urban greenery, and people engaging in community activities, showcasing energy-positive and climate-resilient living.

At EnerCmed, we are dedicated to transforming Mediterranean hinterlands into energy-positive and climate-resilient communities. Our approach combines innovation, sustainability, and community engagement to address the pressing challenges of energy poverty and climate change.

Our Approach

Renewable Energy Communities (RECs):
We focus on establishing Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) in marginalized neighborhoods. These communities produce and share renewable energy locally, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and lowering energy costs for residents. By leveraging solar, wind, and other renewable resources, we create a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

Self-Consumption Schemes:
Self-consumption schemes enable users to produce and consume their own electricity—typically from renewable sources like solar energy—directly on-site. This model reduces reliance on the grid, lowers energy costs, and supports environmental sustainability. Within the EnerCmed project, self-consumption plays a key role in promoting decentralized energy systems and empowering local communities through smarter, cleaner energy solutions.

Nature-Based Solutions (NBS):
In addition to RECs, we implement Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) to enhance the local environment. These solutions, such as green roofs, urban forests, and cool pavements, provide natural cooling, reduce urban heat islands, and improve overall urban resilience. NBS not only mitigate climate impacts but also enhance the quality of life for community members.

Key Projects

Pilot Projects: we have initiated pilot projects in five Mediterranean countries: Italy, Spain, Cyprus, Greece, and Croatia. These projects focus on transforming marginalized neighborhoods in cities such as Genova, Valencia, Patras, Pula, and Novigrad. Each pilot involves the creation of RECs and SCSs and the implementation of NBS to achieve tangible, sustainable results.

Community Engagement: active community participation is central to our mission. We work closely with local populations to understand their needs and co-create solutions tailored to their unique contexts. Through workshops, open days, and collaborative planning sessions, we ensure that community voices are heard and integrated into our projects.

Collaboration and Partnerships: EnerCmed thrives on collaboration. Our consortium includes esteemed partners like the University of Genoa, SINLOC, the University of Cyprus, València Clima i Energia, and the Istrian Regional Energy Agency. By pooling our expertise and resources, we drive meaningful change and create lasting impact.

Our Goals

Combat Energy Poverty: we aim to reduce energy poverty by providing access to affordable, renewable energy. Our projects help lower energy bills and improve energy security for vulnerable populations.

Enhance Urban Resilience:by integrating NBS, we enhance the resilience of urban areas to climate impacts. Our solutions mitigate urban heat islands, improve air quality, and increase green spaces.

Promote Sustainable Development:we are committed to fostering sustainable development in Mediterranean hinterlands. Our innovative approaches ensure long-term environmental and social benefits for the communities we serve.

Inspire Broader Adoption: EnerCmed aims to set a model for other regions facing similar challenges. By sharing our successes and lessons learned, we inspire broader adoption of our strategies, contributing to a more sustainable and equitable future
